What is the recommended age for having breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation can be performed from the age of 17 years old on up using saline implants. However, the legal age for silicone breast augmentation is 22 years of age. You are NEVER too old to improve the appearance of your breasts.

Should I wait until after having children before having breast augmentation surgery?

Not necessarily. More than half the patients who get this procedure do it before having children. The majority of them have no problems breast feeding afterwards. Today we're well aware of how to minimize disruption of the glands to the nipple/areola. The underlying breast implant does not harm the breast-fed baby in any way.

How do I determine what size is appropriate for my goals?

This is a very personal decision. I see many women who just want to achieve a "natural look," to improve the proportionality of the upper and lower body. It's really all about your goals. I take my time listening closely to your personal goals when determining what size implant I will use.

Do breast implants interfere with mammography?

Yes. Breast implants, regardless of their location in the sub-muscular or sub-glandular location, can interfere with mammography. Mammography centers are well accustomed to performing mammography on patients who have had breast implants by taking a third view of the breasts.

Can sensation of the nipple/areola be lost after breast augmentation surgery?

A small percentage (less than 5%) of patients have permanent nipple/areola sensation loss after breast augmentation surgery. Many patients have temporary loss or hyper-sensitivity of the nipple/areola complex. I always take great care during the procedure to ensure that this does not happen.

How do I know if I need a breast lift?

In general, evaluating the position of the nipple/areola complex in relation to the fold under the breast (inframammary fold) will help determine the need for a breast lift. I can do this during your consultation.

What is the difference between High Profile and Moderate profile Implants?

High profile implants project farther than moderate profile implants and are narrower in circumference. Moderate profile implants are wider in shape and do not project as far. At your consultation, I will individually determine the style of implant appropriate for you.

Do I need to get my implants replaced every 10 years?

It is a very common misconception that you should have your implants removed and replaced every 10 years. The only reason you would need to have a corrective surgery is if the implant was leaking. Some women have had their implants for 25 years before they experience the need to have them replaced. Some women end up having them replaced at 7 or 8 years. However, at Plastic Surgery Seattle, we provide an enhanced warranty on your implants. To learn more, give us a call and we would be happy to explain more.

What is the most common complication you have experienced in doing this procedure?

The most common complication associated with breast augmentation is capsular contracture. This happens when the scar tissue that forms around the implant causes the breasts to harden (similar to what a contracted muscle feels like). By placing high profile implants behind the muscle, the chances of this happening are greatly reduced.

How Long Does a Breast Augmentation Procedure Take?

A routine breast augmentation will generally require between 1 and 1.5 hours to complete. Depending on the particular technique used, the size of the implant, and your personal healing process, breast augmentation recovery times will vary with each patient. Dr. Gottlieb can give you a good idea of what to expect during your breast augmentation consultation.

How Long is the Recovery Period Following Breast Augmentation?

Following your breast augmentation at Plastic Surgery Seattle, you will experience soreness and tenderness in the chest area that should subside within a few days and can be managed with pain medication.

In most cases, non-strenuous work responsibilities can be resumed in just a few days. Most patients will be able to return to daily activities in seven to ten days, but should avoid strenuous exercise and other demanding activities for two weeks to a month, depending on Dr. Gottlieb's recommendations. Remember, everyone heals at their own pace. During your breast augmentation consultation and exam, Dr. Gottlieb will discuss expected recovery times and give you specific details on what to expect.

What Are the Risks Involved in Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast enlargement has inherent risks like any other surgical procedure. At Plastic Surgery Seattle, we strive daily to reduce our patients' degree of risk through updated technology, highly trained operating room staff and careful adherence to safety regulations. We take every precaution necessary to make sure each patient is in a safe and sterile environment. Our patients are comforted by Dr. Gottlieb 's skill, experience and professionalism and feel good about entrusting their breast augmentation expectations to us. Dr. Gottlieb will be happy to discuss any risks involved in this procedure during your breast augmentation consultation.

Dr. Gottlieb uses the latest surgical techniques and devices like the Keller Funnel to ensure the long-term safety of his breast augmentation patients. With proper use of the Keller Funnel, post-breast augmentation complications like capsular contracture have been reduced tremendously. Additional benefits also include:

Keller Funnel
  • Employs package to breast with no-touch insertion technique
  • Reduces stress on silicone breast implant shell
  • Reduces the need for larger incision lengths and provides more options for placement
  • Decreases surgical time with less surgeon fatigue
  • Reduces trauma to the patients tissue

Although serious complications following breast enlargement are rare, potential risks include unfavorable scar formation, extreme firmness, bleeding, and anesthesia reaction.
